Which branch are you in? In most branches, a dependent is considered command sponsored if their name appears on the PCS orders. If you were married before getting the orders, he should have been eligible to move with you. And his name should have been listed on the orders.

For Navy dependents, here are the rules: https://www.mynavyhr.navy.mil/Support-Services/Distribution-Management/Dependent-Entry-Approval/

Hello, thank you for this website and Q&A!

My husband and I got married in Dec 2022. I PCS’d from England to Guam in Sep 2023. Before we left, my losing base advised us not to move my husband with me, so I can command sponsor him when I get to Guam and get reimbursed for travel expenses.

Now I am here in Guam and my gaining command is telling me command sponsorship does not authorize reimbursement for dependent travel since my dependent was not command sponsored at your previous base.

It seems no one knows what the actual regulations are when it comes to command sponsorship. Do you know what the regulations are and where I can find it in writing? I’ve tried searching and can’t come up with anything. Thank you

Yes, you're right that the spouse's name must appear on the orders, not just in DEERS. I don't know if there's a standard amount of time for that change to occur. The service member should follow up with their Admin office and base Transportation Office to make sure the paperwork gets pushed through in time. They can also inform their chain of command if there are issues. But ultimately it's their responsibility to follow up and make sure the paperwork is updated.

Hello! My son is currently in C school in Oceania. He got married right after A school before his flight to Oceania. His stuff is and has been here at our (his parents house) and his wife lives here. When she is entered into Deers how long does it take for orders to be reissued so her name is on them? Otherwise she will have to take her belongings with him when they drive to his first duty station? They don’t have a lot of things as they are just starting out but just trying to figure out if the movers would take her things or they just take them with them when they drive. She has to be on the official orders for her to count not just in Deers. Yes they waited till the last min for everything and drives me nuts.

Despite the always expanding local population, finding base housing that meets your family’s needs is still a time-consuming process that often includes a length waiting list.
Hello,

I read all the comments and they were insightful.

My husband is in the Navy. We are currently in WA but his household goods were moved when he was (single) in January. We got married in February. His ship is going back to its home port San Diego. I am not moving with him as I have to finish out my teaching contract. We were notified that the next duty station is Spain but we don’t have the official date yet. His home goods are currently in storage because he could not take them down to San Diego.

When we have our official PCS orders to Spain, would the movers pack up my stuff as well? Or would it be easier to speak to a military liason between the Navy and the moving company and start putting my stuff into his storage unit? Sidenote: he has been going to the storage unit and putting out stuff into it.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Are you currently living with your service member? His moving assistance is from one base to his next base, and will not include items from another location (like your parents' house or your own apartment if you haven't moved in with him yet.) And he only gets moving assistance when he gets PCS orders from one base to a new location. Is he going from Washington to another base somewhere else? Or are you just trying to join him in base housing in Washington.
It's a little unclear from your question. But if you are just moving to his location, no, the military does not assist with moving new spouses to the service member's location. :-(
If he has actual PCS orders, he should get them amended so your name is on them. His moving weight allowance will be slightly higher if he has a dependent (you, the spouse), but that will still only include items packed out from one location. During a PCS move, the travel and per diem allowance is also slightly higher if a spouse is on the orders, so your name should definitely be on his next set of PCS orders.
